I was asked by a club member to look at a locomotive that had a decoder in it, supposedly set to address 3, but would not run. I tried a decoder reset CV8 but it came back with 'cannot read cv'. Before going further l tried to read the loco address, to see if l got the same. This time it came back with loco address as 10 and sure enough, using address 10 the locomotive ran fine. As there was no lights/sound or anything else, the member was happy to leave it as 10. ( I would like to have investigated the cv's on the decoder further, maybe another time ).
So here is what l did for anyone else who wants to find the address of a loco;
To read a locomotive's address on an NCE PowerCab, it is advisable to use a dedicated program track with only that loco on it, as some decoders might not read back easily on the main line. The program track ensures a proper read and write connection.
Press PROG/ESC four times, enter "2" for CV, then type CV 1 (short address) or CV 17 (long address) and press Enter to view the value. For the short address, press 1 to read manufacturer/version, then enter to see the address; for long, press 2 for CV, enter CV 17, then press Enter to read the address. Press Enter again to see the full value in CV18.
